The fatty liver diet

Fatty liver disease — extra fat stored in the liver — is now very common. The good news: in its early stages it can often be improved or reversed, mostly through diet, weight loss and activity. No special medicine required; your kitchen does most of the work.

The one thing that matters most

Gradual weight loss is the most powerful treatment. Losing around 7–10% of your body weight can significantly reduce — and sometimes clear — the fat in your liver. Everything below serves that single goal.

What to cut, and what to eat

Eat more

  • Vegetables (plenty)
  • Whole-wheat roti, oats, brown rice
  • Daal & legumes (chana, lobia)
  • Fish & grilled chicken
  • Whole fruits (not juice)
  • Nuts; olive oil
  • Unsweetened green tea & coffee

Limit

  • Red meat
  • Full-cream dairy
  • White rice & maida
  • Ghee & butter (small amounts)
  • Salt

Cut out

  • Sugary drinks — soft drinks, packaged juice, sugary chai
  • Mithai & desserts
  • Fried foods — samosa, pakora, puri
  • Refined bakery & snacks
  • Alcohol entirely
The biggest hidden culprit

Sugary drinks and mithai drive liver fat more than almost anything — the fructose goes almost straight to the liver. Cutting sweet drinks alone often makes a visible difference.

Habits that help

  1. Aim for slow, steady weight loss (about ½–1 kg per week) — crash diets can actually harm the liver.
  2. Move most days — even 30 minutes of brisk walking reduces liver fat.
  3. Cook at home more; choose grilled, baked or boiled over fried.
  4. Avoid alcohol completely, and check any herbal or over-the-counter remedies with a doctor, as some stress the liver.
Seek medical care if you notice

Yellowing of the eyes or skin, swelling of the abdomen or legs, easy bruising, vomiting blood, or confusion — these can signal advanced liver disease and need urgent review.

Frequently asked questions

Can fatty liver really be reversed?

In its early stage — fat without much scarring — yes. Weight loss and a better diet can clear much of the fat. Advanced scarring is harder to undo, which is exactly why acting early matters.

Are daal and rice allowed?

Daal is excellent — fibre and protein. Prefer whole grains and brown rice, and keep white rice and maida modest.

Do I need liver medicines or supplements?

Usually not — diet, weight loss and activity are the proven treatment. Discuss any supplement with your doctor before starting it.

Been told you have a fatty liver?

It's more reversible than most people realise — let's make a plan.
